Status of initiative: Completed
Description/achievement of initiative

In a broad sense, this partnership will allow for the coordination of student and staff mobility activity between the - State, Society & Governance in Melanesia (SSGM) at the Australian National University (ANU) and partner institutions across the Pacific, under the Australian Government's New Colombo Plan. These activities will be carried out under the existing MoU's that exist between the ANU and partner institutions in the region.Through coordination between relevant academic experts in Australia and the Pacific, this partnership will allow for knowledge transfer on key issues and topics contributing to the sustainable development of Small Island States, including climate change; sustainable economic development; social development in SIDS, health and NCDs, youth and women; and in other key areas.

Implementation methodologies

Production of a 5 year plan with mobility targets and activity plan.Executive office: Network partners, through the Oversight Committee will agree on the resourcing of an executive officer to implement the activity. It is highly likely that the executive officer will reside in SSGM.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

Network partners will collect lessons learned arising from the establishment and maintenance of the Network and the conduct of its activities. SSGM's contribution in this area will be to share research and policy networks with network partners, especially around areas of mutual interest. In capitalising on its location in the Australian national capital, SSGM will provide opportunities for network partners to access policy makers within the Australian Government who make key funding decisions on large scale developmental and educational programs in the Pacific region.

Coordination mechanisms/governance structure

Network Oversight Committee: this committee will be comprised of senior representatives from partner institutions. The committee will determine the strategic vision and plan for the Network.
